Welcome to a whole new world - NORTHERN NEW MEXICO. Las Vegas is where the
Rockies and the Great Plains come together. The cultural diversity and the
varied landscaping are just two of the traits unique to this part of the world.
Our RV Park is located in a valley neatly tucked between the Santa Fe National
Forest and the Carson National Forest.
A LITTLE HISTORY ON NEW MEXICO
The end of the Santa Fe Trail in Santa Fe, New Mexico (originating in
Missouri) is just the beginning of a place rich in history, a place like no
other. The 47th state admitted to the union in 1912, New Mexico is a wonderful
combination of the Navajo and Apache Indians that originally inhabited the
region and the Spanish settlers that later moved in. This portion of the state
includes cities and towns like Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Wagon Mound, La Cueva, Mora
and Pecos.
The history runs deep in this part of the country. In the pueblo of San Juan
you will find the first church constructed in North America dating back to 1598.
This whole region is dotted with historic adobe missions providing insight to
the earliest of Spanish-American history. Pecos National Monument is home to
ancient ruins of a long-ago Indian pueblo village as well as the ruins of a
mission church. Visit Fort Union where for almost 40 years American soldiers
protected settlers against hostile Indian attacks while traveling along the
Santa Fe Trail.
WHERE DID THE NAME COME FROM?
Jean Pendaries (Pan-da-ray) moved from France and settled in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He built and operated the Plaza Hotel until 1875 and then sold the hotel and began buying property at Rociada. He built a saw mill and followed that with the Grist Mill and Homestead. (Both buildings are still standing and can be seen from the road as you near the Guard Building at Pendaries Village.) His daughter married into the Baca family and they later became the patrons of the 5,000 acre ranch, which still carries the Pendaries Name.
